Gary Buffington's Bike Ride Across America

A 62 year old retired ER doctor and former Appalachian Trail end-to-end hiker attempts to ride his bike across America from the Pacific to the Atlantic. He rode 1100 miles last year and has 527 miles planned for this 2007 trip. His 85 year old friend, Cimarron the Trail Boss, has also walked the entire AT (in his 82nd and 83rd years) and will crew from a 1995 VW EuroVan.

On the Road in Colorado Springs

We visited Philmont the Boy Scout Reservation in Cimarron, NM, given in 1939 by Wade Phillips. Cimarron got his name from the post office town down the road. He was a troop leader 15 or 16 times at Philmont. He was in his glory showing me around. Every piece of clothing he brought along has the Philmont logo! I was surprised to see several miniskirted girls in two of the hiking groups. Maybe I missed something in never being a scout.

We then entered Colorado and tonight are at the Air Force Academy with our trip heading through Denver tomorrow through Cheyenne and then West.

At the AFA we saw Falcon Stadium and stayed in a beautiful room with one bed. I tried out my Stephenson Air Mattress on the floor and slept great. I'll be needing it a lot along the ride.
